3 Ways to Multiply Vision in a Leadership Team

One of the biggest setbacks in ministry for leaders is not a lack of love for people, and not having vision to reach people- it's actually building a team. Moses had a love for people AND had clear vision from God to head to the promised land, but we see that in Bible he became exhausted by hearing the disputes between all of the people. In Exodus 18:14 his father-in-law responded, ”What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”

Moses was in the difficult place of doing all the leading while people around him stood and watched.

Here are 3 ways to get out of that rut:

1. Shed the pressure of making all decisions.

Moses and all of Israel KNEW they were leaving slavery and going into the promised land so there was no lack of vision but Jethro found him exhausted and encouraged him to build a team.

  • Making all the decisions doesn’t make me valuable, it limits the organization to ONLY my perspective and ONLY my gift set.
  • There are people God has placed around us who are able bring fresh perspective and fresh giftings to our churches.
  • If no one can make decisions except the team leader, the leader will get worn out and high capacity leaders on that team will eventually look to stretch their leadership elsewhere.

2. Establish clear lanes of execution for the team.

Some lead 1000's, 100's, 50's, 10’s.

  • The team is the strongest when everyone knows their place.
  • Have the capacity to identify talent AND capacity in the people around you.
  • We also must identify the difference between capacity and talent:
    • Talent is the gift set to accomplish something.
    • Capacity is the ability to steward it with excellence.
  • Things that limit capacity:
    • Emotional maturity.
    • Spiritual sharpness.
    • Submitted heart.
  • Be careful to place people in roles who are highly talented but lack capacity because of one of three reasons listed above.

3. Hold the line.

Moses gave the team a STANDARD by which to govern and lead.

  • Be careful to establish a team and to leave the standard up to the individuals of the team.
  • A team needs to be forged in a set standard to hold one another accountable to. They used the instruction God gave them as a standard.
  • A leader's responsibility is to make crystal clear the standard that is to be attained on a weekly basis.
